Mental Health Nursing Review: monthly updates

Brief updates on the work of the Scottish Mental Health Nursing Review for mental health nurses and other stakeholders who are interested in the work of the Review.

August 2024 update

Recent activities:

  • following the completion of National Mental Health Nursing Conversation analysis report, in partnership with the Leadership Advisory Group and Practitioner Reference Group, we are considering potential thematic subgroups required for the next stage of the Review process
  • mapping key themes identified through the analysis against existing work underway across the Scottish Government - this will help identify any gaps, provides a focus on the remit of the Review, whilst ensuring we share learning and create strong links with wider colleagues
  • provide funding to See Me to complete an Anti-Stigma and Discrimination Research Project - this project will consider the extent to which stigma  impacts mental health nurses’ experiences, including recruitment and retention challenges and will consider potential solutions to address these challenges
  • finalising planning for a series of group interviews based on the thematic analysis, including engagement events for students, academic staff and mental health nurses working in social care settings
  • reviewing the submissions of examples of positive and innovative practice received via the mental health nursing review questionnaire
  • the Leadership Advisory Group and Practitioner Reference Group (PRG) continue with monthly meetings
  • continue to build on our evidence base, with the PRG doing further work on the literature review

Next steps include:

  • begin to draft an interim report and provide updates to internal Governance structures
  • finalise thematic subgroups and lines of enquiry as we move to the next stage of the review process, where the working groups will begin to suggest potential recommendations and actions
  • continue to engage with mental health nurses and students during this process -for example, the project team will be attending Scottish Care’s upcoming Social Care Nursing Conference
  • begin to plan further engagement with people with lived experience and carers, as we progress the Review
