Mental Health Nursing Review: monthly updates
Brief updates on the work of the Scottish Mental Health Nursing Review for mental health nurses and other stakeholders who are interested in the work of the Review.
November 2024 update
Recent activities:
- the project team continues to engage and seek further views within the Discovery phase of the Review. This has included engagement with Mental Health/Learning Disabilities Consultant Nurse Forum for Scotland, Scottish Recovery Network, the UK MH Academic Community, NHS Education for Scotland’s Centre for Remote and Rural Health Care and the Welsh Government
- the See Me Anti-Stigma and Discrimination Research Project, funded by the Scottish Government, continues to progress well. This project is considering the extent to which stigma impacts mental health nurses’ experiences, including recruitment and retention challenges and potential solutions to address these challenges. Mental Health Nurses and Students can contribute to the survey. See: Mental Health Nursing survey
- the draft interim report has been approved by the working groups and is now being shared with internal governance structures
- an update on the review to date was presented to the Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy Education and Training Advisory Group
- the Practitioner Reference Group (PRG) continues to explore, review and synthesise the literature focussing on Exploring the Roles, Responsibilities and Job of the Mental Health Nurse: A National and International perspective
- engagement events scheduled for 6 December with Newly Qualified Mental Health Nurses and 9 December for Student Nurses
- the Leadership Advisory Group (LAG) and the PRG continue to meet regularly and contribute to the Review
Next steps include:
- the PRG and LAG to collaborate and consider the emerging themes within workshop sessions, with the view to begin considering draft recommendations for the review
- provide updates to Governance groups on the work of the Review to date and next steps
- explore further the role of the Mental health Nurse within positive and innovative practice submissions received with the PRG and LAG, as we progress through the Review
- continue to plan further engagement with people with lived experience, carers and the mental health nursing workforce, as we being to draft the final report and Review recommendations
- planning for further engagement with Scotland's Executive Nurse Directors
- planning for wider engagement with the MH nursing academic community and further engagement and exploration in relation to workforce education and development
