Mental Health Nursing Review: monthly updates

Brief updates on the work of the Scottish Mental Health Nursing Review for mental health nurses and other stakeholders who are interested in the work of the Review.


Recent activities:

  • developed a draft interim report, highlighting the work of the Review since January to August 2024.  The draft is with the working groups for comment and review  
  • developed a mapping paper which reviews the priorities raised through the National Mental Health Nursing Conversations, against existing policy workstreams.  It also considers what points raised during the Conversations are within the Review’s remit and suggests potential lines of enquiry for the next stage of the Review
  • attended Scottish Care’s Social Care Nursing Conference on 4 September. We are continuing to work with Scottish Care and Care Inspectorate colleagues to explore further engagement with the social care sector
  • the Practitioner Reference Group (PRG) continue to refine a proposal for a literature review focused on Exploring the Roles, Responsibilities and Job of the Mental Health Nurse: A National and International perspective
  • engaged with See Me to discuss progress of the Anti-Stigma and Discrimination Research Project.  This project is currently investigating the extent to which stigma impacts mental health nurses’ experiences, including recruitment and retention challenges and will consider potential solutions to address these challenges
  • met with university sector to discuss engagement with students and academics
  • attended and presented at the national MH Nurse Forum, this included providing an update of the discovery phase of the Review
  • completed an initial analysis of the examples of positive and innovative practice received via the mental health nursing review questionnaireThe PRG and Leadership Advisory Group (LAG) will consider this further
  • the LAG and the PRAG continue with monthly meetings

Next steps include:  

  • finalise thematic subgroups and lines of enquiry, with the PRG and LAG and begin deep dive discussions around emerging themes and potential recommendations
  • provide update to Governance groups on the work of the Review to date and next steps
  • continue to plan further engagement with people with lived experience and carers, as we progress the Review
  • finalise planning to host engagement events for students and newly qualified nurses
  • continue to engage with Scottish Care with support from the Care Inspectorate on how to engage with mental health nurses working in care settings
  • agree a publication date of the interim report
