Miscarriage Care and Facilities in Scotland: Scoping Report NHS Ayrshire and Arran

This report details the findings of a scoping exercise to better understand miscarriage care in Scotland within this Health Board. The individual Health Board reports and the national report seek to aid policy makers and Health Boards in making decisions about improvements to Miscarriage Care

Gestation at which miscarriage care is provided

All sites in Scotland were asked to provide an approximation of the gestation at which miscarriage care is provided at their site. There was wide variation in responses, particularly among sites that do not currently collect data on gestation. The average approximations of gestation at which miscarriage care is provided are presented in Table 4 below.

Table 4: Gestation at which miscarriage care is provided in Scotland
Site Under 9 weeks % 9-12 weeks % Over 12 weeks %
All Scotland sites Average 65 26 9

The data provided by NHS Ayrshire and Arran on approximate gestation at which miscarriage care is provided in each site is provided in Table 5 below. It should be noted that University Hospital Ayr reported that although they collect data on the number of miscarriages, they do not collect data on gestation. University Hospital Ayr refers all cases of miscarriage to University Hospital Crosshouse where gestation data is captured. Arran War Memorial Hospital noted that the gestations of pregnancies are a rough estimate only as no data is kept on gestations within the first trimester, however the majority of miscarriages occur before the patient has booked with their community midwife.
