Potato exports guide

Information on the conditions and phytosanitary requirements for the export of Scottish potatoes, where known by country.

Venezuela

Seed potatoes (updated 16 July 2019)

Export of seed potatoes to Venezuela is only allowed if an application for an import permit is approved. The phytosanitary requirements on the import permit may be different from those listed below.

Growing crop tolerances

Inspector's instructions VZ/2006/2 apply. Class tolerances apply, except if the tolerances below are stricter:

  • All viruses: NIL

Tuber tolerances

Inspector's instructions VZ/2006/2 apply.

Minimum tolerances for seed export apply, except for:

  • Gangrene ( Phoma foveata): NIL
  • Skin spot ( Polyscytalum pustulans): NIL
  • Black dot ( Colletotrichum coccodes): NIL
  • Silver scurf ( Helminthosporium solani): NIL
  • All viruses: NIL
  • Common scab ( Streptomyces scabies): Dutch scab scale 1.0
  • Black scurf ( Rhizoctonia solani): Dutch scurf scale 10% light

Other requirements

Import permit: required.

Varieties: only varieties listed by the Venezuelan Ministry of Agriculture may be imported. Varieties not on the Venezuelan national list may have to be trialled before large scale import is allowed.

Size: tubers should weigh no more than 4 ounces (113.4 g) (for regions in the Andina zone) or no more than 8 ounces (226.8 g) (for the rest of Venezuela).

Chemicals: the exporter is expected to take commercial responsibility for the fact that the seed potatoes will not be coloured with dye as prescribed in Venezuelan regulations.

Packaging: sacks or wooden boxes. If wood packaging is used (e.g. boxes, pallets), the material should be treated and certified. Wood material should comply with International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures (ISPM 15) on wood packaging materials.

Certificates: an additional certificate declaring PCN freedom on the basis of soil testing has to be added to the Phytosanitary Certificate.

Procedures on arrival: points of entry: Ports of La Guaira and Puerto Caballo.

Additional declarations to be included on the reverse of the phytosanitary certificate for seed potatoes

  1. The under mentioned pests are not known to occur in the area of production of the seed potatoes: Synchytrium endobioticum, Corynebacterium sepedonicum ( Clavibacter michiganensis ssp. sepedonicus), Leptinotarsa decemlineata, Agriotes lincatus, Agriotes obscurus, Agriotes sputator, Agrotis segetum, Omophlus lepturoides, Nacobbus aberrans, Helicobasidium brevissonii and Helicobasidium pupureum.
  2. Samples of soil from the land in which the potatoes were grown were drawn and tested prior to planting and were found to be free from PCN (Globodera rostochiensis and Globodera pallida)
  3. The seed potatoes were visually inspected and found free from Colletotrichum cocodes, Geotrichum candidum Helminthosporium solani, Oospora (Polyscytalum) pustulans, Phoma exigua var. exigua, Phoma foveata, and Pythium vexans.
  4. The seed tubers have been obtained from crops certified to be free of viruses.
  5. The seed potatoes are within the permitted limits of freedom from organisms that cause rots, of Streptomyces scabies and Rhizoctonia, and of mechanical damage and deformation.
  6. The seed lots are practically free of soil particles and any other foreign materials.
  7. The consignment was examined and found to be in conformity with the health standards prescribed above and certified accordingly within 14 days prior to exportation.
