Public appointment: Members appointed to Highland NHS Board

Public appointments news release.


The Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care, Neil Gray MSP today announced the appointment of Janice Preston and Neil Wright as Members of Highland NHS Board.

Members

Janice Preston is a senior leader with over 20 years’ experience working with organisations and boards in public and third sector organisations. She has over 40 years’ experience in the NHS and third sector roles across the health and social care system in relation to transformation which is client centred, holistic and addresses inequalities. Janice has a track record in innovation, problem solving and creating curious and empowering cultures.

Neil Wright has worked as a doctor in the NHS in Scotland and England for over 33 years, with 11 years in cardiothoracic surgery, and for the last 15 years as a GP in Fort William, Lochaber. He has provided input over several years to NHS Highland clinical governance and medical advisory committees. Neil is also a GP trainer and educational supervisor. He brings direct experience of medical practice, teamworking and leadership, in both secondary and primary care.

Appointments

These appointments will be for 4 years. Janice Preston’s appointment is from 6 January 2025 to 5 January 2029.

Neil Wright’s appointment is from 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2029.

These appointments are regulated by the Ethical Standards Commissioner.

Remuneration

These appointments are part-time and attract a remuneration of £11,700 for a time commitment of 52 days per annum.

Other ministerial appointments

Janice Preston and Neil Wright do not hold any other public appointments.

Political activity

All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process.  However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity within the last five years (if there is any to be declared) to be made public.   

Janice Preston and Neil Wright have had no political activity within the last five years.

Background

NHS Highland’s catchment area comprises the largest and most sparsely populated part of the UK.  It is responsible for meeting the health needs of around 320,000 people living in the area, and provides a comprehensive range of primary, community-based and acute hospital services for the population.
