Housing Statistics for Scotland Quarterly Update: New Housebuilding and Affordable Housing Supply to end March 2024
This statistical publication presents latest quarterly figures to end March 2024 on new housebuilding and Affordable Housing Supply, along with annual rates of new housebuilding and affordable housing supply per head of population, with comparisons to other UK countries.
All-Sector New Housebuilding
Chart 1: There were 19,632 homes completed and 16,404 new builds started in 2023-24.
In total there were 19,632 homes completed and 16,404 new builds started in 2023-24. This includes social sector led and private sector led completions and starts.
New build house completions and starts decreased between 2022-23 and 2023-24, as Chart 1 indicates. New housebuilding starts and completions decreased by 15% (- 3,000 homes) and 17% (-4,150 homes) respectively.

Map A shows that in 2023-24 the highest new build rates were in Midlothian and East Lothian which had rates of more than 78 homes per 10,000 population.
The lowest rates were observed in Clackmannanshire, East Dunbartonshire, Inverclyde, West Dunbartonshire, Scottish Borders, Dumfries and Galloway, Falkirk, Stirling, North Lanarkshire, Angus and South Ayrshire which each had rates of 26 homes or fewer per 10,000 population.
Note that all-sector completion rates calculations contain some estimated figures for Aberdeen City, East Dunbartonshire, South Ayrshire, Na h-Eileanan Siar and Stirling. Further details are in the Data and Methodology section.
