Housing Statistics for Scotland Quarterly Update: New Housebuilding and Affordable Housing Supply to end June 2024
This statistical publication presents latest quarterly figures to end June 2024 on new housebuilding and Affordable Housing Supply, along with annual rates of new housebuilding and affordable housing supply per head of population, with comparisons to other UK countries.
All-sector new housebuilding
Chart 1: There were 19,293 homes completed, and 15,296 new builds started in the year to end June 2024.
In total there were 19,293 homes completed and 15,296 new builds started in the year to the end of June 2024. This includes social sector led and private sector led completions and starts.
New build house completions and starts decreased between the year to the end of June 2023 and the year to the end of June 2024, as Chart 1 indicates. New housebuilding starts and completions decreased by 17% (- 3,032 homes) and 17% (-4,003 homes) respectively.
Map A shows that in the year to the end of June 2024, the highest new build rates were in Midlothian and East Lothian which had rates of more than 78 homes per 10,000 population.
The lowest rates were observed in East Dunbartonshire, Clackmannanshire, Inverclyde, West Dunbartonshire, Dumfries and Galloway, South Ayrshire, Falkirk, Stirling, North Ayrshire, Angus, Scottish Borders and Orkney Islands which each had rates of 26 homes or fewer per 10,000 population.
Note that all-sector completion rates calculations contain some estimated figures for Aberdeen City, East Dunbartonshire, South Ayrshire, Na h-Eileanan Siar, Stirling and Glasgow City. Further details are in the Data and Methodology section.
