Housing Statistics for Scotland Quarterly Update: New Housebuilding and Affordable Housing Supply to end June 2024

This statistical publication presents latest quarterly figures to end June 2024 on new housebuilding and Affordable Housing Supply, along with annual rates of new housebuilding and affordable housing supply per head of population, with comparisons to other UK countries.


Quarterly comparisons

Charts 4 and 5, which show the number of new build quarterly starts and completions in the year to the end of June 2024 compared with the previous year. Comparisons of quarterly data should be made to the corresponding quarter in a previous year as there have been no seasonal adjustments made to the data.


Chart 4: Housebuilding starts for the year to the end of June 2023 and the year to the end of June 2024, by quarter.

As chart 4 shows, there were fewer private sector starts in April to June 2024 compared with the same period in 2023 (-19%; -921 homes). Local authority led starts also decreased by 61% (-447 homes) but housing associations starts increased by 8% (28 homes).


Chart 5: Housebuilding completions for the year to the end of June 2023 and the year to the end of June 2024, by quarter.

Chart 5 shows lower private sector led completions (-8%, -323 homes), local authority led completions (-24%; -92 homes) and higher housing association completions (17%, 102 homes) when comparing April to June 2024 to the same period in 2023.
