Racist Incidents Recorded by the Police in Scotland, 2010-11
This bulletin presents statistics on racist incidents recorded and cleared up by the eight Scottish police forces in 2010-11.
2. Main Points
- The number of racist incidents recorded by the police in Scotland has shown a reduction for the fourth consecutive year, with 4,907 incidents recorded in 2010-11.
- In 2010-11, a third of all racist incidents recorded by the police occurred on the street, while 19 per cent took place in a dwelling house and a further 17 per cent in a shop.
- There were 6,169 crimes recorded as part of a racist incident in 2010-11. The number of crimes recorded as part of an incident has reduced for the third consecutive year and is now at its lowest level since 2004-05.
- Of those who were victims of a racist incident, 34 per cent were aged 26 to 35, compared to 14 per cent who were aged 20 or under (where age and gender was known).
- In 2010-11, where ethnic origin of the victim was known, 24 per cent were Pakistani, while 46 per cent of victims were of Asian origin (which includes Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Chinese or other Asian).
- In 2010-11, 46 per cent of perpetrators of racist incidents were aged 20 or under (where age and gender was known).
- Almost three quarters (74 per cent) of perpetrators in 2010-11 were referred to the Procurator Fiscal or the Scottish Children's Reporter Administration (SCRA), while two per cent of perpetrators received a police warning (where action taken was known).
