GP Retention Working Group: report and recommendations

Improving GP retention – recommendations from the GP Retention Working Group sets out key actions we will take to improve GP recruitment and retention in Scotland.

2. Methodology/Approach

The Working Group established that it was important to engage directly with the GP workforce in Scotland on what is effective in supporting GPs to remain in practice. Three workshops were held in September 2023 and aimed at GPs at different stages of their careers, enabling a focus on specific challenges and solutions. These workshops targeted:

  • Early Career GPs
  • Mid-Career GPs
  • Late Career GPs

A total of 68 GPs were invited to the online workshops with a total of 30 attending overall. Workshops were also attended by representatives from the RCGP, SGPC (Scottish General Practice Committee) and National Education Scotland (NES) in an observer capacity and as members of the GP Retention Working Group.

The Working Group also surveyed territorial Health Boards in Scotland to build a picture of what support was offered to GPs locally across Scotland to support them to remain in practice and effectively enable them to do the job they trained to do.
