Residential rehabilitation bed capacity in Scotland, September 2024
This publication presents the findings from a survey of residential rehabilitation facilities in Scotland to provide updated data on residential rehabilitation bed capacity.
Findings
The survey received responses from 25 residential rehabilitation facilities with bed capacity currently in operation that met the definition of residential rehabilitation developed by the Residential Rehabilitation Development Working Group. This is five more facilities than were identified in August 2021 (20 facilities).
Facilities were asked to report on their maximum number of beds for residential rehabilitation treatment. The survey found a total maximum residential rehabilitation capacity of 513 beds in Scotland. This was an increase of 88 beds (21%) compared to 2021 (425 beds). Table 1 shows maximum residential rehabilitation bed capacity by facility in 2021 and 2024.
The majority of facilities (80%, n = 20) accept referrals from all ADP areas in Scotland. Five facilities reported only accepting referrals from their immediate or surrounding ADP areas.

a Capacity at this facility can be used for residential rehabilitation or stabilisation based on individual needs. This facility meets the definition of residential rehabilitation.
b Six flats (12 beds) have been returned to the local council. One bed can now only be used for overnight placements in an emergency situation and is therefore not included in the September 2024 bed capacity.
c Three two-person occupancy rooms were converted to single-occupancy resulting in a decrease in capacity of three beds. One additional bed was created.
d This facility provides support for adults with children. There are between 20 and 39 beds available depending on the composition of the families attending the facility. The statistics here present the maximum capacity available.
