Results from the Scottish Agricultural Census: June 2024

Final results from the 2024 June Agricultural Census on land use, crop areas, livestock and the number of people working on agricultural holdings.

Module results on slurry storage and agricultural machinery are also included within this publication.

After storage, the majority of holdings spread slurry direct

In addition to the agricultural machinery module, one module question was also asked on manure management, specifically the destination of slurry after storage. This module question was asked to support calculations of emissions from manure management systems and follows module questions in the June Agricultural Census 2023 on manure and slurry application. Of the 18,762 holdings that responded to this year’s census, 1,985 holdings (or 11%) responded to the module question on slurry destination. This module question was voluntary and not applicable to those holdings without storage facilities for slurry.

Figure 19: Slurry destination in the last 12 months, percentage, June 2024 (holdings could select more than one slurry destination)

Bar chart showing slurry destination in the last 12 months. The majority of responding holdings spread slurry direct with no further storage (61%). More than one slurry destination could be selected.
