Pig numbers decrease compared with the five year average

In 2024, the number of pigs decreased by 6.5% to 315,500 when compared with the five year average.

Pigs are categorised as follows: breeding herd (sows in pig, gilts in pig, and other sows) and ‘other pigs’ (barren sows for fattening, gilts used for breeding, boars, and liveweight pigs).

In 2024, the numbers of ‘other pigs’ was 278,700 a decrease of 6.0% compared with the five year average.
