Results from the Scottish Agricultural Census: June 2024

Final results and detailed tables from the 2024 June Agricultural Census on land use, crop areas, livestock and the number of people working on agricultural holdings.

Module results on slurry storage and agricultural machinery are also included within this publication.


Total poultry in 2024 was 12.0 million

There was an estimated 5.98 million poultry birds for egg production in 2024 and  4.81 million birds for meat production. Estimates from 2023 are not comparable to previous years due to methodological improvements.

In 2014 there were more birds for meat production (7.80 million birds) compared with birds for egg production (5.71 million birds). In 2015 the number of birds becomes similar until 2021. In 2024 there were 4.81 million birds for meat production and 5.98 million birds for eggs production.
