Results from the Scottish Agricultural Census: Module June 2023

This report provides final results from the 2023 June Agricultural Census module covering: soil cover, tillage, irrigation, nutrient management, and fertiliser application and storage.

Nutrient management

Soil testing is more likely to be carried out on cropping land than grassland

For those holdings with grassland, 24% carried out soil testing in the last five years,  while 65% of holdings who have cropping land completed soil testing on their cropland.

Many holdings made changes to nutrient application based on soil testing

Soil nutrient management is used to improve crop growth, maintain soil health, minimise environmental damage and create efficiencies.

Of holdings who performed soil testing on their cropland, 93% also made changes to their crop nutrient application, based on this testing. This represents 61% of all holdings with crops.

Of holdings with either grass or cropland, 17% wrote or updated their nutrient management plan in the last year.
