Results from the Scottish Agricultural Census: June 2023

Final results from the 2023 June Agricultural Census on land use, crop areas, livestock and the number of people working on agricultural holdings. Estimates for 2022 are published in the supporting documents.


Larger area used to grow vegetables for human consumption than stockfeed 

The area used to grow vegetables intended for human consumption (excluding potatoes) stood at 21,500 hectares in 2023, an increase of seven per cent compared with the five year average.

The area used to grow vegetables for animal feed (stockfeed) decreased by five per cent compared with the five year average. The total area of vegetables for stock feeding was 15,800 hectares.

Information on vegetable area in this section has a gap due to the survey being paused in 2022.

Lines in 2013 show vegetables for stockfeed have a larger area (19,100 hectares) than vegetables for human consumption (15,900 hectares). In 2016 year the lines cross and vegetables for human consumption becomes greater. In 2023 vegetables for human consumption is 21,500 hectares whereas vegetables for stockfeed is 15,800 hectares.
