63,867 incidents of domestic abuse were recorded by the police in 2023-24

Dundee City, West Dunbartonshire, West Lothian, Clackmannanshire, Glasgow City, Falkirk, North Ayrshire, East Ayrshire, Midlothian, Fife, North Lanarkshire and South Ayrshire had domestic abuse incident rates per 10,000 population above the Scottish average.

Who were the victims? In 2023-24, more than 4 out of 5 (83 per cent) victims of domestic abuse were female, where gender was known.

What was the gender of the victims and suspected perpetrators? 81 per cent of incidents involved a female victim and a male suspected perpetrator. 15 per cent of incidents involved a male victim and a female suspected perpetrator. In the remaining 3 per cent of cases, the victim and suspected perpetrator were the same gender. Where gender was known.

Where did the incidents occur? 90 per cent of domestic abuse incidents occurred in a home or dwelling (where location was known).

When did the incidents occur? 31 per cent of domestic abuse incidents occurred at the weekend. 14 per cent on Mondays, 13 per cent on Tuesdays, 14 per cent on Wednesdays , 13 per cent on Thursdays, 14 per cent on Fridays, 16 per cent on Saturdays and Sundays.
