Scotland's International Goods Trade: Quarter 2 2023

When comparing the value of Scotland’s goods exports in the year ending June 2023 with the year ending June 2022:

• The value of Scotland’s international goods exports increased by 12.6% to £36.7 billion. The UK saw a 12.2% increase.
• When oil and gas are excluded, the value of Scotland’s international goods exports increased by 13.2%, which was proportionally greater than the 12.0% growth experienced by the UK.
• The value of Scotland’s goods exports to the EU increased by 12.4% to £21.8 billion, which was primarily driven by oil exports.
• The value of Scotland’s goods exports to non-EU countries increased by 13.0% to £14.9 billion, which was largely driven by growth in exports of drinks and power generating machinery.
• The Netherlands remained Scotland’s top destination, accounting for around a fifth (19%) of the value of Scotland’s total goods exports. Around three quarters (74%) of the value of Scotland’s total goods exports to the Netherlands was oil.
• When oil and gas are excluded, USA emerged as Scotland’s top goods export destination. Over a quarter (27%) of the value of Scotland’s total goods exports to the USA were drinks.
• The value of Scotland’s goods imports increased by 12.2% which is the same proportional increase seen by the UK (12.2%).
• The value of Scotland’s total trade in goods increased by 12.4%, and total trade in goods with both EU and non-EU countries increased.
