Scotland’s International Goods Trade: Quarter 3 2022

This report contains trade in goods data from the latest release of HMRC's Regional Trade Statistics (RTS).


When comparing value in the first nine months of 2022 with the first nine months of 2019:

  • the value of Scotland’s international goods exports showed little change (1.2% higher in 2022). In comparison, international goods exports from the UK were 7.1% higher.
  • when oil and gas are excluded, Scotland’s international goods exports saw an increase of 16.7% (up £2.5 billion), compared to a 2.4% increase for the UK.
  • the value of Scotland’s goods exports to the EU increased by 19.7% (up £2.5 billion). When oil and gas are excluded, Scotland’s goods exports to the EU increased by 20.9% (up £1.2 billion).
  • Scotland’s goods exports to non-EU countries decreased by 16.9% (down £2.2 billion). When oil and gas are excluded, Scotland’s goods exports to the non-EU actually increased by 14.1% (up £1.3 billion).
  • despite a decrease of 5.9%, the Netherlands remained Scotland’s top destination for goods exports. When oil and gas are excluded, USA emerged as the top export destination for goods exports.
  • the value of Scotland’s goods imports increased by 40.0% (up £7.2 billion). This increase was driven largely by imports of gas.
  • total trade (imports plus exports) increased by 17.2% (up £7.5 billion). Goods trade with EU countries rose by 17.0% (up £3.4 billion), and goods trade with non-EU countries increased by 17.4% (up £4.1 billion).
