Scotland’s International Goods Trade: Quarter 4 2022
This report contains trade in goods data from the latest release of HMRC's Regional Trade Statistics (RTS).
The Netherlands remained the top destination for Scotland’s exports, with £6.2 billion of goods exported to the Netherlands in 2022. Exports to the Netherlands accounted for 17% of Scotland’s total goods exports in 2022 and increased by £662 million (11.9%) from 2021.
However, when oil and gas are excluded, the United States was Scotland’s top destination for goods exports in 2022, accounting for 16% of Scotland’s goods exports. The value of goods exports to the United States increased by 20.4% (£628 million) to £3.7 billion in 2022 compared to 2021. This was the largest value increase for any destination over this period and was predominantly driven by a 35.8% increase in the value of drinks exports (up £283 million) and a 46.7% increase in the value of power generating machinery exports (up £135 million).
Excluding oil and gas, France was Scotland’s second largest export destination, with the value of exports increasing by 17.1% (£294 million) in 2022 compared to 2021. The top six export destinations all experienced increases over this period. Of Scotland’s top ten goods export destinations in 2022, when oil and gas are excluded, only Norway (down £44 million, 5.6%), and Ireland (down £3 million, 0.4%) saw decreases in the value of goods exports over this period. Compared to 2021, the value of goods exports to Russia experienced the largest value decrease in 2022 (down £119 million, 68.5%), when oil and gas are excluded.
