Scotland's New National Park Appraisal Panel: final report

This report includes the Appraisal Panel’s advice to Ministers on the extent to which nominated areas meet each of the criteria for consideration for designation as new National Parks.


Appraisal panel membership and structure

The appraisal of nominations has been undertaken by a panel of Scottish Government officials, experts from relevant executive non-departmental public bodies (including NatureScot, Visit Scotland and Historic Environment Scotland) and external advisors with relevant experience of National Parks and the work of National Park Authorities. External advisors on the core panel were acting in an independent capacity, drawing on their particular experience and expertise, rather than as organisational representatives.

The appraisal panel has brought together knowledge and expertise from a broad range of areas to facilitate a comprehensive assessment of each nomination against the appraisal criteria. The panel consists of two linked teams: (i) a small core appraisal team; and (ii) a larger expert appraisal team. The appraisal panel structure is outlined in Figure 1. Membership of the panel is outlined in tables 1 and 2 below.
