Introduction

This publication provides statistics on applications, outcomes and payments made, fees and costs, as well as apologies made, under Scotland’s Redress Scheme. Data contained within this publication covers the period from the launch of the scheme on 08 December 2021 to 06 June 2024, spanning a total of 30 months. This builds on last year’s publication which covered the first 18 months of the scheme, a period from 08 December 2021 to 06 June 2023.

Scotland’s Redress Scheme is delivered collaboratively by the Scottish Government and Redress Scotland. The Scottish Government is responsible for the administration of the scheme, including the end-to-end processing of applications, gathering and verifying information from applicants, and issuing payments. Redress Scotland is an independent decision-making body whose role is to determine the eligibility of an application and the level of award to be offered to a survivor or next of kin applicant based on the information provided.

Scotland’s Redress Scheme has been set up for survivors of historical child abuse in care in Scotland. It was set up to recognize and acknowledge what happened to them, and the harm which this caused. At the end of the process, survivors may receive a payment, an apology for the abuse they suffered, and emotional support. Survivors, or their next of kin, can apply if they were abused:

  • Before 01 December 2004
  • As a child – under the age of 18 at the time of the abuse
  • In a relevant care setting in Scotland

A step-by-step guide to the application process can be accessed on the Redress Scotland website.
