Scottish Health Survey: content review outcomes report

This report summarises changes that have and will be made to the content of the Scottish Health Survey (SHeS) from 2024 onwards. Some of these changes do not apply to the 2024 survey and will be made to future years.

Food insecurity

During the review process there was strong support for including the existing questions on an annual basis from a number of organisations including GCPH, Obesity Action Scotland, PHS and SG policy.

There were requests for alternate questionnaires, including the ten United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) food insecurity measurement questions, as well as a request to split the sample so half answer the existing questions and the other half answer the USDA Adult Food Security Survey module. There were also requests to add additional questions on knowledge, confidence in and availability and use of services and payments.

Given the majority support for retaining the existing questions and the lack of space in the survey for including a longer set of questions, we are including the existing food insecurity questions in the self-complete module on an annual basis from 2024.
