Scottish Health Survey: content review outcomes report

This report summarises changes that have and will be made to the content of the Scottish Health Survey (SHeS) from 2024 onwards. Some of these changes do not apply to the 2024 survey and will be made to future years.

Gambling

PHS provided support for retaining the gambling module in SHeS during the review process and SG policy provided support during follow-up discussions once the review closed.

PHS made suggestions for new questions including questions on trading in crypto currency and its use for gambling, and additional questions on gaming and mode of gambling.

Following the end of the review process, the SHeS team became aware that the Gambling Commission had commissioned the Gambling Survey for Great Britain to collect annual official statistics on gambling behaviours in Great Britain.  The sample includes around 1,000 adults in Scotland each year. Gambling questions have previously been included in SHeS every 4 or so years so this survey will provide more frequent gambling statistics that can be combined over time to provide a larger sample if needed.

More information about the Gambling Commission survey is available on its website.

Following discussion with policy colleagues and the SHeS Project Board we agreed to remove the gambling module from SHeS with the possibility of including it again in future years, if the Gambling commission survey data does not meet Scottish needs.
