Scottish Health Survey: content review outcomes report

This report summarises changes that have and will be made to the content of the Scottish Health Survey (SHeS) from 2024 onwards. Some of these changes do not apply to the 2024 survey and will be made to future years.

Chronic pain

During the review we received support from the SG Clinical Priorities team to retain the chronic pain module. The request asked for the questions to be included annually, instead of biennially as was originally agreed when the questions were included. This was not possible due to space restrictions in the survey and we followed up the review with discussion with the Clinical Priorities team. We agreed that there was no need to collect data so regularly and that the chronic pain module could be included every 4 years. This means the module is next due to be included in SHeS in 2026.

We will review the module with colleagues in advance of 2026 to consider whether questions about headache and musculoskeletal disorders can be incorporated into this module.
