Atlantic salmon - determining run timing proportions: report
Recently, a number of genetic markers associated with run timing was published. This Scottish Marine and Freshwater Science report describes the development and calibration of a panel of twelve of these markers into a tool that could be used to determine run timing proportions in Scottish Atlantic salmon populations.
Conclusion
Analysis has shown that the explanatory power of the twelve SNP panel matches that of the original panel reported as being linked to the return timing trait. The new twelve SNP panel contains coverage of both sub-peaks identified on chromosome Ssa09 and also redundancy of coverage in these regions in case of non-amplification of one of the SNPs. The panel has shown it is thus capable of quantifying the heritable variation identified by Cauwelier et al. (2018) and, as such, provides a tool for screening of salmon within rivers in order to determine return time distributions.
