Scottish Vacant and Derelict Land Survey 2023

The Scottish Vacant and Derelict Land Survey (SVDLS) is a data collection to establish the extent and state of vacant and derelict land in Scotland.


10. Derelict and Urban Vacant Land Reclaimed or Brought Back into Use

A total of 178 hectares (177 sites) were reclaimed or brought back into use since the previous survey. A further 205 hectares (20 sites) were removed because they had become naturalised.

A bar chart showing the top five new uses of derelict and urban vacant land. Residential is the top new use by far at 66 hectares, followed by Recreation and Leisure at 31 hectares, then Storage at 21 hectares.  Mineral Activity has 14 hectares and Other General Industrial has 13 hectares.

More than a third (37%) of the land was brought into residential use.

Private sector funding brought back 93 hectares into use. Public sector funding accounted for 30 hectares and mixed public and private funding was used for 11 hectares.
