Statistics Group strategic priorities

The strategic priorities for the Scottish Government Statistics Group.

  • There is a need for the statistics profession in Scotland to evolve, build on and grow the excellent work over the last number of years since the pandemic. This allows us to remain relevant, get the most out of our time and skills to provide a valuable service for the users of our statistics. These strategic priorities are to provide a direction to help teams decide where to focus their efforts in improving the production and dissemination of statistics.

  • There are four high level strategic priorities, and we have suggested some steers under each:

Users  Efficiency  Data  People

Value for users is central to what we do.

Steers:

  • Undertaking sustained user engagement

  • Improving publications so they have more impact

  • Communicating and speaking about our statistics

Streamlining what we do.

Steers:

  • Reproducible analytical pipelines (RAP) in open source by default

  • Minimising work that adds less value

Maximising the use of our data.

Steers:

  • Enabling coherence of our statistics

  • Considering fitness for purpose of data

  • Allowing greater granularity of data

Making the most out of statisticians’ skills.

Steers:

  • Enabling intent-based leadership at all levels

  • Network building and breaking out of silos

  • Using learning and development opportunities

  • The strategic priorities tie into three overarching guiding principles that the Chief Statistician has also set out which should underpin what we do:

  1. Focus on our purpose – in the context of us as statisticians, our teams and the statistics we produce.
  2. Chase the value – the tasks we do are all contributing to things that add value for our users, and minimising things that add less value.

  3. Be ready for the future – that we aren’t left behind in terms of our skills, communications, relevance and technical infrastructure.

  • How individual teams across the statistics group take forward these priorities is up to them, and how they fit into business planning activity. Some of the priorities and steers might be things that teams are already doing; some may be more of a priority some statistical teams than others.
