Temporary accommodation funding: 2023 to 2024

Shows the allocation of £2 million of funding in 2023 to 2024 targeted to the local authorities facing the most significant temporary accommodation pressures.

Local authority funding of £2m in 2023 to 2024 for temporary accommodation

In our response to the Temporary Accommodation Task and Finish Group recommendations, we committed to support local authorities with a range of approaches to local housing stock management. This includes:

  • large scale flipping of tenancies
  • effective void management
  • greater allocations of social homes to homeless households
  • bringing empty homes back into use to increase the supply of available affordable housing

We said we would provide targeted funding of £2 million in 2023 to 2024 to the local authorities facing the most significant temporary accommodation pressures. This can be used to maximise the use of existing housing stock to help reduce the number of households in temporary accommodation.

We agreed with COSLA Leaders that the funding has been allocated to those local authorities who have experienced larger percentage increases in temporary accommodation use in the most recent fiscal year. The national percentage increase in the number of households in temporary accommodation between 31 March 2022 and 31 March 2023 was 5.8%. Therefore, the funding will be distributed to any local authority which experienced an increase of 5.8% or more.

The distribution formula for the funding has been calculated by the increase in the number of households in temporary accommodation in each recipient local authority as a proportion of the total increase in the number of households in temporary accommodation across all recipient local authorities.
