FLOOD RISK MANAGEMENT
The Flood Risk Management (Hazard Maps: Specification of Flood Probability) (Scotland) Direction 2013

The Scottish Ministers give the following direction to SEPA in exercise of the powers conferred by section 2(1)(a) of the Flood Risk Management (Scotland) Act 2009(a).
In accordance with section 2(4) of that Act, they have consulted SEPA.
Citation, commencement and interpretation
1.-(1) This Direction may be cited as the Flood Risk Management (Hazard Maps: Specification of Flood Probability) (Scotland) Direction 2013 and comes into force on l lth December 20l3.
(2) In this Direction
- "the Act" means the Flood Risk Management (Scotland) Act 2009;
- "flood" has the meaning given to it in section 3 of the Act; and
- "SEPA" means the Scottish Environment Protection Agency.
Flood hazard maps: specification of flood probability
2. SEPA must, in preparing flood hazard maps pursuant to sections 21 and 22 of the Act, apply the following definitions, as respects a flood, to the corresponding expressions in section 22
- "low probability" (or "extreme event") means probability of a return period of 1000 years or more (or an annual probability of occurrence of 0.1% or less);
- "medium probability" means probability of a return period of 200 years or more, but less than 1000 years (or an annual probability of occurrence of 0.5% or less, but more than 0.1%); and
- "high probability" means probability of a return period of 10 years or more, but less than 200 years (or an annual probability of occurrence of 10% or less, but more than 0.5%).
