Scotland's results from the UK Innovation Survey 2023, covering the three-year period from 2020 to 2022


Geography of Innovation

Figure 7: In 2020-2022, businesses in the South East of England were most likely to be innovation active (40.2%). Businesses in Wales were least likely to be innovation active (30.9%). Scotland ranked 10th, out of the 12 UK regions and countries, in terms of its share of businesses that were innovation active (32.4%). The innovation rate of a region will be influenced by the industrial composition of the businesses headquartered there.

The share of businesses that were innovation active fell between 2018-2020 and 2020-2022 in all regions of the UK. The largest reduction was in the West Midlands (13.2 percentage points) and the smallest was in the North East of England (1.1 percentage points). In Scotland, the innovation active rate fell by 6.6 percentage points.
