Key points

  • according to published data from the Department for Levelling up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC), Scotland has received 46,643 visa applications through the UK ‘Ukraine Sponsorship Scheme’, which includes those sponsored by the Scottish Government (Super Sponsor Scheme) and by Individual Sponsors as at 17 October 2023, with 39,194 visas issued. As of 17 October, a total of 25,891 displaced people from Ukraine have arrived in the UK on a visa sponsored either by an individual Scottish sponsor or sponsored by the Scottish Government.
  • there was a peak of welcome accommodation use in November 2022, with around 3,780 welcome accommodation rooms and cabins occupied. The estimated number of displaced people from Ukraine in welcome accommodation, as well as the number of welcome accommodation rooms occupied, continued on an overall decreasing trend, with a slight uptick in the latest week. This may be an early sign of levelling off or a fluctuation; however it is too soon to draw any conclusions.
  • as reported by welcome accommodation teams across Scotland on 26 September, there were around 1,595 welcome accommodation rooms occupied by displaced people from Ukraine in welcome accommodation in Scotland.
  • a total of 775 prospective hosts submitted offers to host from 28 November 2022 to 30 September 2023.
  • following a Scottish Government survey of local authorities, data indicates that as at 29 September 2023, 2,843 Ukrainian children were enrolled in primary and secondary schools across Scotland.
